His fully-licensed, Master’s level experience providing telephone counseling started in the late 1990s when he worked with an organization providing international telephone and on-site crisis response, therapy, and management consulting for Fortune 500 companies. During his tenure, Jonathan re-wrote the manual for the provision of telephone support services and led the training team for new hires.

When using telephone counseling, a therapist must pay attention to non-visual cues to fully understand what you are feeling and saying; they need to distinguish subtle differences in breathing, the pace of speech, and sounds that indicate movements like pacing and fidgeting. Jonathan has provided fully-licensed, Masters-level telephone therapy, and crisis response for 20 years and has been trained by the top professionals in the field. Most people deal with an occasional “Anxiety Storm.” Sometimes those nervous storms are ongoing or escalate into panic. Common types of anxiety are romantic anxiety, social anxiety, and performance anxiety. Regardless of the type, there is effective help here in Austin for all types of Anxiety Storms. We will look at your family history, your current circumstances and identify triggers of your anxiety, then develop a plan that is tailored to your personality so that the skills are easy to remember and use.

Telephone Therapy is available

People in and around Austin are often extremely busy with work, family, and friends. Since driving across Austin to a therapy appointment isn’t always convenient, I offer telephone counseling for individuals and couples.

Empirical research by Reese, Conoley, and Brossart (Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2002) states that telephone therapy is as effective as face-to-face therapy and that clients showed equally healthy therapeutic bonds with their therapists via phone counseling. It is worth noting that this therapeutic bond is the best predictor of counseling effectiveness.

For couples counseling, the first session is required to be face-to-face.

  • Individual Counseling

    I offer specialized treatment in Austin for anxiety, depression, relationships, stress, and trauma using techniques from:

    • Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT),
    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT),
    • Advanced Critical Incident Stress Management/Debriefing (CISD/M, a trauma-informed therapy)

  • Couples Counseling

    Using the empirically validated Gottman Method of Couples Counseling, I provide couples a safe place to work through conflict and build more enjoyable relationships. My objective is to help you work through conflict without regularly needing a therapist by offering guidance, education, and emotional support in a way that helps you use those skills at home.

    You’ll find our counseling office in west-central Austin, just minutes from downtown in the West Lake Hills neighborhood.

  • Crisis and Trauma - PTSD Counseling

    You and/or your loved ones will not have to re-live the story of your trauma by telling it to me. I have been helping people recover from trauma and post-traumatic stress for over 20 years. Originally trained by one of the founding fathers of Critical Incident Stress Management and Debriefing, I honed my skills at an international crisis response team and have responded to over 400 onsite, telephonic and in-office traumatic situations. It is important to know that having survived a tragedy does not mean that you have a ‘disorder’ (ie PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Jonathan F. Anderson, LPC-s, Owner and Therapist

Jonathan is the owner of Gate Healing, PLLC and has worked in the therapeutic community since 1990. After completing his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas, Austin in 1994, he attended the highly-regarded University of Minnesota, Twin Cities to earn his Master’s degree in 1997. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is recognized as a Board Approved Supervisor by the State of Texas Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. Jonathan has completed Level-2 of the Gottman Method of Couples Counseling, and in 1998 received specialized training by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation in Advanced Critical Incident Stress Management & Debriefing.

Counseling Austin Therapy Dog

Buddy, the Therapy Dog: Austin’s favorite helper pup!

This picture really captures him (when he’s awake): Present, intelligent and a show-off. Buddy brings warmth to my office only a dog can provide! Plus, he’s a great listener . . . I mean, look at those ears!

Buddy is a regular presence in my office. He helps people feel at ease. He is quite intuitive, does not bark, and enjoys exploring parks around Austin, especially playing at Zilker Park. If he is not in “therapy-work” mode, he will likely come to say hello, then go to sleep beside me. Sometimes, you’ll find him looking out the window in the waiting room; or sleeping in front of it. Feel free to give him a scratch, he’s super friendly! But, please don’t give him treats since by the end of the day he may not have an appetite for his dinner!
